How Earthquakes are Measured?

How Earthquakes are Measured?

This video takes a look at how earthquakes are measured. Visit the National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colorado. Spokesman for the NEC, Waverly Person, shows how seismologists locate earthquake epicenters. An actual earthquake was captured and Waverly Person explains what is happening. The tape also explains the Mercalli, and the Richter Scales. A seismologist then shows how to find an epicenter using 3 reporting sites.

Forces That Shape Our Earth

Forces That Shape Our Earth

This program looks at the major causes of landforms on the earth. Videotaped all over North America, this spectacular program looks at the various forces which shape our land, namely: glaciers, volcanoes, temperature changes, gravity, the work of the wind, movement in the Earth and rivers, lakes and oceans. This is an excellent introduction to all of these forces working together to shape the planet on which we live.

Movement In the Earth's Crust

Movement In the Earth's Crust

The crust of the earth is constantly subjected to stresses which cause deformation in the form of cracks, folded or bent rock, fractures and faults. Using diagrams and computer animation this DVD helps to explain what takes place below the earth’s surface in the crust and mantle. This video looks at the many kinds of faults and why and how they occur.

Plate Tectonics and Continental Drift

Plate Tectonics and Continental Drift

Scientists have discovered that the Earth is composed of large “floating” plates. These plates are in constant movement worldwide. Where plates collide into other plates is usually an area of earth movement and volcanic activity.

Faults

Faults

A fault is a fracture in the earth’s crust along which two blocks of the crust move with respect to each other. This video, using diagrams and computer animation, shows this process and explains the many different kinks of faults in including normal, reverse, thrust, strike-slip and dip-slip.

Exotic Terrane

Exotic Terrane

A geologic history of the Pacific Northwest. Explains how islands near China moved across the Pacific Ocean and accreted, or welded themselves to the North American continent. Animations of North America forming, explain the process. Includes a visit to Hells Canyon in Idaho. Interviews with expert geologists on location add to the viewers experience.

Hidden Fury: The New Madrid Earthquake Zone

Hidden Fury: The New Madrid Earthquake Zone

Uses 3-D and map animations to locate and characterize the New Madrid Earthquake Zone in the Mississippi River Valley. Relives newspaper article accounts of a series of great earthquakes that occurred between 1811-1812. Features animation of how the Mississippi River Valley was created. The Alaskan Earthquake, 1964

The Alaskan Earthquake, 1964

Shows the disastrous effects of the great Alaska earthquake of March 27, 1964; particularly on population centers, including Anchorage and Valdez. Focuses attention on the engineering problems that confront urban developers in earthquake-prone areas. Explains damage in terms of geologic environment. Uses animated sequences to help explain the general nature and cause of earthquakes and the locations of principle earthquake zones throughout the world.

Mexico Earthquake, September 19, 1985

Mexico Earthquake, September 19, 1985

Witness the devastation caused by the earthquake that rocked Mexico City in September, 1985. More than 400 buildings collapsed and another 700 buildings were seriously damaged. A team of experts from the National Bureau of Standards, Center for Building Technology and the U.S. Geological Survey immediately flew to the disaster area to assess structural damage. Aftermath cinematography along with computer graphics are used to illustrate the failure of beam-to-column joints, “slab punching”, the “hammering” effect and how slab shear failures accounted for 30% of the damage. This program provokes some serious questions such as... what is the probability of similar earthquake damage in the United States, and how can we efficiently design our structures to withstand earthquake forces?
